Caltrain SF-SJ Electrification

PGH Wong / Balfour Beatty Infrastructure Inc.

The electrification of the Peninsula Corridor from San Francisco to San Jose is upgrading the performance, operations, capacity, and safety of Caltrain service and allow for a blended system with California High Speed Rail. As Reliability, Availability, and Maintainability (RAM) Engineer and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Engineer for the project, Tenco tasks included development of the RAM Program and RAM requirements for contractor procurement contracts, and development of the EMC Program and other key EMI analyses, studies, and plans.

Tenco’s tasks at Caltrain also included crucial work to get power utility approval to energize the system:
* For Caltrain’s 2×25 kV system, Tenco led and performed the Single Phase Study and System Impact Study to show and prove to the Power Utility that Caltrain’s single-phase load (using 2 of the 3 utility phases at traction power substations) would not adversely impact the grid, including power generators.
* The Power Utility required these significant studies and assurance before the Power Utility would turn on power at the traction power substations.
* The studies considered load flow and regeneration; power quality and IEEE-Std-519; imbalance; and faults and protective relay settings.
